A simple, low-cost solar water purifier (SWP) for rural households, which does not require electricity or waste precious water has been developed. The SWP consists of four tubular solar water heaters attached to a manifold. Non-potable water is filled in the SWP after filtering with four-layered cotton cloth and heated in the stagnation mode by solar energy to make it potable. The cost of the SWP is around Rs 2500–3000 (~US$ 40–50) and is so simple that any small rural workshop can fabricate it. In large-scale production it is envisaged that the cost can come down to Rs 1500. Details of the technology are provided in this article.Keywords

As a result of scarcity and deteriorating quality of drinking water especially in rural India, more attention is being paid to rainwater harvesting. A very simple and low cost drinking water technology (DWT) has been developed which uses appropriate rainwater harvesting methodology and solar purification. The costliest item in DWT isthe storage tank. A possible mechanism for reducing this cost by the government of India scheme has been indicated inthe article. With cost reduction, this DWT can become a viable and economical solution for potable water in rural households.Keywords

Sweet sorghum (SS) is one of the varieties of sorghum having stalks with high sugar content and is grown primarily for forage, silage and syrup production. SS syrup is a high antioxidant food material produced by concentrating its sugary juice. SS has been mostly used in India for ethanol production, but demand for its syrup is growing. This article discusses R&D on SS syrup in India and highlights the challenges that need to be overcome to meet the growing demand. The challenges in improving crop productivity and syrup processing are also outlined. A simple economic analysis of small-scale SS syrup plant shows that producing syrup is economical both for farmers and syrup-producing units.Keywords
